Albums of the Year #6 (tie)
I just couldn’t pick which one I liked more.
Okkervil River - The Stand Ins
I like The Stage Names from last year better, but this is still pretty darn good.
Drive-By Truckers - Brighter Than Creations Dark
Most of my favorite DBT songs were penned by Jason Isbell, since he departed the band I did not have high hopes for this album. I ended up being plesentantly suprised.
Homemade Cinnamon Buns Are On the Way
Dough is rising as I type. Very excited about this. :D
Albums of the Year #7
The Gaslight Anthem - The ‘59 Sound
I may be a little premature in including this one in my Tops since I’ve only owned it for about a week and a half. I’ve loved it every second of those 10 days, though. As the name implies, lyrically, there’s lots of nostalgia in this record. I’ve read some reviews, most of which compare them to Springsteen. I’m not much of...
Albums of the Year #8
The Old 97’s - Blame it on Gravity
Just good old reliable 97’s. Enough said.
Albums of the Year #9
The Gougers. A Long Day for the Weathervane.
This is a great Americana album by a group I’ve been following since they went by The Sidehill Gougers back in College Station, TX. Jaimie and Shane trade off on vocals and I love the combination of a male and female lead on the same album.
Broken Promise by the aforementioned Sleepercar
Albums of the Year #10
I did a lot of windshield time this year and this was great driving music.
Steve and Justin Townes Earle NPR interview →
JTE put out one of my favourite albums this year. Here’s he and his dear old Dad, on NPR.
Hay guys.

So it turns out that my flight is delayed another 5 hours. To keep things interesting, the wifi at the airport has somehow stopped working on my laptop. Good times.
Hanging out at the airport…..good times. Hope you have a good book and an I-pod. Finding the bar is usually good to kill an hour or so. You can meet some enteresting characters that way too

“Care to expound?”
*chuckle* Sure! Do you keep this list in your drawer in case someone comes along wanting to talk about religion? I will start by saying that I should have chosen a word other than “answers.” More like, opinions and...
This Year in Music
Following is a list of the albums I purchased this year (I think I’ve remembered all of them). Tomorrow, I’m going to make my self stop arranging and re-arranging my favorites and start counting down my Top 10 of ‘08.

Ricky Young - Learn to Steal
The Felice Brothers - The Felice Brothers
South Austin Jug Band - Strange Invitation
Justin...

Merry, Merry Everyone
I hope everyone is having a great Holiday so far. Here’s what my last 24 hours have been like.
Yesterday:
Made rolls for Christmas dinner
Went to Christmas Eve Church Serivce w/ my Parents. I grew up in a small, small town, so the options for musical entertainment are not good. The highlight of the service was a guy playing Silent Night on the harmonica (actually, it was quite good). ...

Holy Smokes. Allison, my dear friend in all things music, just IM’d me a link to a radio station out of Manitoba. The station is UMFM. The link is umfm.com. The host is Jeff. The show is Tell the Band to Go Home. Since I’ve been listening, I’ve heard Neko Case, Tom Waits, Whiskeytown, and many others. It’s been a long, long time since I’ve listened to radio and loved...

I will try anything once. I am not one to say no to anything (as long as it won’t kill me or otherwise harm me), but I have yet to try Sushi. There is not really a good reason for it, I do not find it disgusting…I just have yet to try it.
That is very sad. I must confess that I was in my mid-twenties before I tried it. But, it’s now one of my favorite...

I love pandora. I love that song even more.
More on Final Grading
This is really the worst part of my job. I absolutely abhore grading papers and exams, but I feel like all of the assignments I give are an important part of the students’ learning experience. It really pisses me off when I spend hours and hours grading things that they obviously put no time into preparing for. For example, in one of my senior (college) level courses, the final was a 2...

Top Artists of 2008 (based on Last.fm listening)
I’m stealing this idea from seibold.
Here’s what last.fm says about my listening. In reality, it’s probably a bit different as only about 1/3 of my listening is via computer or I-Pod.

4 Okkervil River 312

Happy Thursday:

Another strange thing happened to me this morning. I was coming out of Wheatfields at 7:30am after getting my breakfast and coffee when I heard someone yell “Whats goin’ on, trouble?”… I think ‘certainly this person isn’t talking to me’… Then I look a little closer. It’s Charles Weinaug. I realize this means nothing to some of you, but to put it into perspective this is the kid that...
